Drumming and dance have long been used as a way to achieve altered states. Rhythmic sound and movement are a form of mantra and can bring us to the quiet centered place that exists in the eternal present.
In this class participants played a simple repetitive percussion rhythm. This rhythm is interwoven with additional rhythms played by the others creating a woven tapestry of sound. Following this experience, simple repetitive dance steps were taught for those who want to experience trance dance.
Regina Compernolle is a former school director of City in Motion Dance Theater where she taught Afro-Brazilian dance and director of Women of the Drum. She and Zoe LaGrece teach classes combining drum and dance.
